Historical tour of the Shipping House

Step into the world of maritime grandeur, artistic architecture, and Amsterdam heritage. Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is located in the former Shipping House, a masterpiece of the Amsterdam School and a national monument since 1974.

During this special tour, organized in collaboration with Museum Het Schip, you will discover the building in the finest details. Everywhere you see references to the rich history of Dutch seafaring. These can be found in the interior, but also in the sculptures, the monumental staircases, and the impressive stained glass world map of no less than 106m².

The iconic paternoster lift is also featured. This still-moving lift from 1928 is now enclosed in glass and no longer in use for passengers, but forms a unique part of the building's historical character.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, six shipping companies had a joint head office built on the Prins Hendrikkade. Architect J.M. van der Meij designed a building that radiated power and ambition – right down to the stained glass and marble. In 2007, this imposing building was transformed into a five-star hotel with respect for the past. During the tour, you will discover how history remains tangible in every corridor, room and ornament.

Taking part in this tour is a unique opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful buildings in Amsterdam from the inside. Do you want to be sure of a spot? Then book in advance via the Museum Het Schip website or contact them for questions or group requests.
